Your App Store Screenshot Captions Are Now ASO Keywords

Apple is now indexing the text inside your screenshots. Indie devs who treat screenshots as conversion-only just lost a discovery surface.

quietly, sometime in the last few months, apple's app store search team turned on something most indies haven't clocked: the text on your screenshots is now indexed for search.

not the screenshot file. the words baked into the image. ocr it, tokenize it, weight it as ranking signal. apple confirmed it in a recent app store connect update, and aso researchers spent the spring confirming what already showed up in their data — keywords that appear only in screenshot captions are pushing impressions on those terms.

if you've been treating screenshots as a conversion asset only, that mental model is now wrong.

what changed#

your app product page has had three discovery surfaces for years: title, subtitle, and the keyword field. screenshots were always a conversion mechanism — the thing that decided whether someone who tapped your icon also tapped install.

apple is now treating the captions overlaid on screenshots as a fourth surface. they don't carry the same weight as the title — that would be too easy to spam — but they nudge ranking on long-tail queries in a measurable way. the same change applies to localized screenshots: russian and brazilian portuguese captions index against russian and brazilian queries, and translated keyword fields no longer cover for english-only screenshot text.

the implication for indie aso is straightforward. if your screenshot caption says "track your runs," apple now sees "track your runs" as an indexable phrase associated with your app. if it says "v2 finally here" or "now with widgets," it sees that too — and indexes accordingly.

why this is bigger than it sounds#

most indies write screenshot copy the same way they write tweet copy. punchy. headline-driven. that's the wrong instinct now — punchy without target keywords is a missed surface.

the right move is screenshot captions that are punchy and contain the phrases you want to rank for. harder than it sounds. "calorie tracker that doesn't lecture you" is a great headline. it's also not a phrase anyone googles. "macro tracking app" is the phrase, and it has to land in the same caption without sounding like seo soup.

the aso teams at the bigger studios figured this out two months ago. indies are still on screenshot copy from 2024.

the localization trap#

the harder version is localizing it. you now need keyword-aware captions in every language you ship in. and the keyword research has to happen in each market — translating an english target keyword rarely gives you the actual high-volume term in spanish or german.

most indies don't have time to do this for ten languages, and the localized screenshot set quietly tanks discoverability in non-english markets. great english aso, invisible in france, because french captions are a literal translation instead of the phrase french users actually search.
